Swimming and Knowing
One of my friends and colleagues likes to use the metaphor of swimming to describe the process of getting to know a situation, process, or person.
The metaphor has all the elements of immersion, swimming in a sea of intuitions, insights, and interpretations that don’t quite fit together into a whole picture.
It’s easy to feel “at sea”, a little lost and confused, but this kind of immersion that knows it does not know is the deepest and most penetrating kind of coming to know.
Subsequent progress in making changes may seem gradual, but it is profound because it works with a deep understanding of what is already there.
